School District 7 has the honor of being ranked among the top 100 districts in the country according to Money Magazine.
Teachers here have a great amount of experience and advanced education. Many have received the, "Those Who Excel" award for excellence in education as well as Illinois Teacher of the Year, the Illinois Distinguished Educator Award, and the Milkin Family Foundation Education Award. Other recent awards include Outstanding First Year Teacher, the Teacher Tribute Awards, National Baseball Coach of the Year, National Hero in Education, and the Great Expectations Class Act award.
District 7 takes every step needed to supply the best possible education. The district allocated $23-mil. to build Edwardsville High School, which opened in the fall of 1997. As a new era approaches, the district will continue programs such as renovations, technological upgrades, an improved safety plan, and more.
Edwardsville/Glen Carbon has six public schools, four parochial, Metro-East Lutheran High School, and one private school.
After school programs, Saturday workshops and evening classes for creative children are available at Creative Express in Glen Carbon.
Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE) enters the year 2000 with a plan for the future. In its short 40 plus years, the university has changed from a primarily commuter school to a full-time university with more than 2,300 students who live in two campus residence halls and nearby apartments. SIUE reflects Edwardsville/Glen Carbon's growth. As enrollment continues to rise, additional programs will be added and a proposed third residence hall built. A $21-mil. Engineering Building will open in the spring of 2000 to welcome the new millennium.
Academics come first at SIUE. Students choose from 41 majors offered by the College of Arts and Sciences or by one of four professional schools. Teaching excellence is of paramount importance as well. Faculty members have received numerous honors and are leaders in their specialties. Students enjoy a faculty/student ratio of 1 to 15.
School amenities that include a religious center, an experimental theater, a fitness center, 130 student organizations and 14 varsity sports, ensure a well-rounded educational experience.
A series of distinguished speakers and performers have appeared at the campus of SIUE including former Surgeon General, C. Everett Koop, former NAACP Chairwoman Myrlie Evers-Williams, prolific writer
John Updike, actor Hal Holbrook, the James Sewell Ballet Company, the St. Petersburg String Quartet, and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.
Lewis & Clark Community College offers Edwardsville/Glen Carbon an affordable, quality education also. Students obtain the first two years of a core curriculum to transfer to four-year colleges as well as professional and industry training.
