The community of Elgin, spanning both Kane and Cook counties, has flourished greatly since its establishment in 1836 by brothers James and Hezekiah Gifford. The thriving area, encompassing a populace of more than 100,000 residents, enjoys easily accessible amenities right within the Elgin borders. Two excellent school districts cater to students — School District U-46 and School District 301 — with Elgin Community College providing a site for higher education. Several healthcare facilities serve residents of Elgin and its neighboring communities, each promoting health and wellness within the region.
Recreation abounds with more than 1,200 acres of parkland extending throughout the landscape of Elgin. Sites include the newly-built Centre of Elgin, offering a 200,000 square foot family recreation facility, two municipal golf courses and the 36-mile Fox River Bike Trail.
Dining, shopping, museums, arts and theater are abundant in Elgin, with the Hemmens Cultural Center, home to the award-winning Elgin Symphony Orchestra, the Elgin Public Museum, the State Street Market, Prairie Rock Brewing Company and much more spread throughout the ever-growing city.
Elgin is undergoing a massive downtown and riverfront renovation and preservation project, adding luxury condominiums and apartment complexes, new shops and restaurants and more offerings in the arts. Through this renovation process, downtown Elgin has become an urban area, attracting more people and business to the expanding district.
In correlation with this community facelift, many parts of Elgin have been promoting green development. In its quest to become a green city, four Elgin facilities have led the way in seeking energy-friendly components to their current developments.
In the construction of the city’s seventh fire station, builders plan to use recycled steel and glass and an energy-efficient lighting system, along with a number of other recyclable materials. Both Sherman Hospital and the Gail Borden Public Library District’s first branch will use geothermal energy heating and cooling systems, while Judson College’s new library plans to use a natural ventilation system.
The city is aspiring to become a green city, and with the advent of these environmentally safe developments, it looks like its well on its way.
Elgin continues to build upon its already solid foundation, affording both residents and guests of the city an attractive area in which to spend a day shopping or a night visiting the theater. The quality of life continues to rise, making Elgin an even more appealing site to a start a family or establish a business.
