When it comes to entertainment, Elgin has a wide variety from which to choose, whether indoors taking in the arts scene or outside sampling the fresh air and festivities. Here is a look at some of the area favorites, and be sure to check out the websites listed here for a more comprehensive range of choices.
For music lovers, the Hemmens Cultural Center on Dexter Court is one of the best places in the area to see a live performance. It has hosted some big names including B.B. King, Willie Nelson and the Gin Blossoms. The 1,200-seat theater is also home to the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, which has twice been honored as the Illinois Symphony of the Year (see story on page 26). The orchestra hosts classic, pops and holiday concerts throughout the year and children over the age of six are welcome to attend.
If theater is your preferred venue, taking in a play is as easy as heading over to East Chicago Street to see the Elgin Theatre Company perform. This local company has been staging works for over 50 seasons and offers the community and surrounding area a variety of selections. Among the productions this group has performed are musicals, comedies, dramas and mysteries.
Another theater option is the award-winning Janus Theatre Company located at The Elgin Art Showcase space on the 8th floor of the Professional Building at 164 Division Street in downtown Elgin. This group has presented over 50 plays during its existence and has recently settled into its new home. The space, which is run by the City of Elgin, also hosts a variety of other arts-related events each year.
Elgin Community College Arts Center is also a great place to see top-notch performances, including dance, theater, and many other types of entertainment. The college supports several in-residence groups including the Elgin Youth Symphony Orchestra (see story on page 30) and is also home to three fine arts galleries.
Prefer being outdoors? Take a long, lazy afternoon and relax at Lord’s Park—a great family spot. This 111-acre park is home to a zoo with bison and elk as well as baby farm animals. There are also basketball and tennis courts, a children’s play area and a museum on the grounds. At Wing Park you can unwind, follow the bike path for a little exercise, picnic or play a nine-hole round of golf on the course that was designed and built in 1908. The Wing Park Bandshell hosts a variety of events outdoors.
Those not satisfied with anything less than the full 18-holes can head over to The Highlands on Sports Way and get the entire experience, which includes soaking up the gorgeous scenery. There is also a practice facility here with grass tees and a 9,000 square foot putting green. Individual or group lessons are also available by appointment.
For something entirely different, try your luck at the Grand Victoria Casino on South Grove Avenue. Check out the slot machines or play a few hands of blackjack for fun. Save a little time to see what is on the entertainment schedule at the cozy Fox & Hounds bar or sample the buffet on weekends; feast on all-you-can-eat steak, prime rib and crab legs.
There are a wide variety of things to do for fun in Elgin, whether indoors or outdoors. From taking in a performance to picnicking with friends or family, there is an entire range of choices available. Although it’s nice to be near Chicago, one doesn’t have to go all the way into the big city when Elgin offers such a terrific selection nearby.
