Healthcare in Fairview Heights

Ready access to well-equipped hospitals is a requirement for modern families. Fairview Heights’ nearby neighbor, Belleville, has two excellent hospitals that are only a few minutes away for Fairview Heights residents. The two are Memorial Hospital and St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.

St. Elizabeth’s Hospital

St. Elizabeth’s Hospital (located at 211 S. Third St. in Belleville) is a general acute care, 498-bed, not-for-profit hospital. It is one of 13 hospitals in the Hospital Sisters Health System, which has headquarters in Springfield, Illinois. St. Elizabeth’s is also one of seven hospitals in the Unity Health Network. The hospital, the oldest and one of the largest healthcare providers in the area, had its 125th anniversary in the year 2000.

St. Elizabeth’s is home to the Southern Illinois Heart Institute (SIHI) which was formed in 1997 as a joint venture between the hospital and the largest cardiology physician group in southern Illinois. Its goal is to offer people simplified access to a comprehensive array of cardiovascular services and help improve their cardiovascular health – all close to home. A free SIHI walking program was started during the first year. Today, it has a membership in excess of 4,000.

Satellite outpatient facilities are operated by the hospital in nearby O’Fallon at 1512 N. Green Mount Rd. and in Mascoutah at 739 N. Jefferson. Laboratory tests, non-emergency x-rays, mammograms, physical therapy, and other diagnostic tests are available at both facilities. At the UrgiCare Center in the O’Fallon location, no appointment is needed for prompt treatment of minor injury or illness.

Those over age 55 will find “VIP treatment” as a member of the Unity Advantage Program. Members are offered discounts on specific services and purchases, assistance in filing insurance claims, educational and social programs, daytime outings, and more.

Memorial Hospital is a full service medical center with 313 beds. The hospital’s staff of physicians are trained in a wide range of medical specialties. The hospital’s inpatient services include surgery, pediatrics, psychiatry, obstetrics/gynecology, critical care, intensive care, and telemetry monitoring. It also offers extensive cardiovascular diagnostic and treatment services.

A state-designated Poison Treatment Center, the hospital’s 24-hour emergency service offers fast track service for urgent medical conditions.

Memorial Hospital boasts state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient diagnostics imaging services – with such equipment as CT scanners, magnetic resonance imaging, mammography, ultrasound, nuclear medicine (with SPECT imaging,) and X-ray.

Memorial Hospital’s Belleville Health and Sports Center is equipped with a cardiovascular fitness center, Nautilus/Lifecycles, and free weights. It features aerobics classes, an indoor jogging track, racquetball courts, and a whirlpool/sauna/steam room.

The Fairview Heights area has several high quality nursing homes, offering skilled long and short term care. An apartment-style retirement community that offers independent living is located in the city. Fairview Heights is also the setting for the Illinois Center for Autism, a treatment and training center for young people.
