
Recreation and outdoor leisure time provide a healthy environment in today’s hectic world. Frankfort offers a variety of year-round innovative programs and activities for the young and young at heart. From art and dance classes, to hands-on craft and hobby courses and field trips, the Frankfort Park District provides a multitude of activities to choose from throughout the year. Expansion plans are in the development stage for Main Park. These plans include a new pavilion, volleyball and tennis courts.
The summer of 2004 marked the inaugural season for the Falcons football league at Frankfort’s Main Park. Youngsters 12 years of age and under posted an 18-3 season record in 2005 and the Falcon Varsity Blue team brought home a “Super Bowl” trophy for Frankfort.
The Old Plank Road Trail was completed in 1997. Winding through Frankfort and several neighboring communities, this 20-mile picturesque bike, walk and hiking path offers hours of enjoyment for all ages. Over two miles of the Old Plank Road Trail travels between Pfeiffer Road and 108th Avenue, and provides access to Frankfort’s historic downtown district, Main Park, Michele Bingham Park, Indian Trail Park, the Frankfort Public Library and Grand Prairie School.
The Prairie Park located on White Street in Frankfort was opened in 2002. This 13-acre outdoor recreation project features preserved open space lands, natural plants and a fishing pond. In 2003, the Prairie Park received the “Conservation & Native Landscaping” award by the USEPA and Chicago Wilderness. In 2006, the Village was awarded the Will/South Cook Soil and Water Conservation District’s first Urban Award for its continuing efforts regarding conservation and the environment. Recent additions to the Prairie Park include a playground and 35-foot pavilion. The Old Plank Road Trail winds through the tranquil environment and offers residents a chance to relax in natural landscaped surroundings.
A 28,000 square foot recreational facility, Founder’s Center, opened in 1997 in downtown Frankfort. The facility features a gym, dance studio, basketball and volleyball courts, arts and crafts rooms, and a teen group activity center. Space at the facility is available for rent to the public for special events and meetings.
Fort Frankfort, a community playground project built and maintained completely by volunteers, is home to a variety of playground equipment and pavilions.
Frankfort Square Park District covers acres of park area. In addition to a variety of recreational programs for all ages, the Frankfort Square Park District recently opened a splash park and dog park.
Frankfort offers a variety of golf courses for the avid golfer. Prestwick Country Club, is an established 18-hole golf course with a private club; Green Garden Country Club offers a 42-hole public course and driving range, and Square Links is a 9-hole public course.
With multiple baseball and soccer fields, sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, picnic areas, nearby golf courses and natural open spaces, Frankfort offers the perfect setting for relaxation and family fun.
