Tourism

Geneva affords tourists a great escape. Whether it is one day or one month, visitors have endless options before them. Take a stroll through the charming shops of the historic downtown, spend a day at one of many parks and recreational sites, or catch a play at one of the area’s many theaters.

Festivals in Geneva are famous. Especially the June Midsommar Festival - Swedish Days. A celebration of Geneva’s Swedish heritage, this six-day event has been an annual tradition for more than 50 years. Evening entertainment, tasty foods and beverages, activities for all ages, an arts and crafts show, Rosemaling competition and an old-fashioned carnival are just a few of the delights this occasion has to offer.

The Geneva Arts Fair takes place the fourth weekend in July, and features more than 140 artists from all over the country. September’s Festival of Vine is a three-day festival of gourmet food, wine, carriage and trolley rides, flower markets, games, art and more. This event takes place the second full weekend of the month.

Holiday spirit is plenty during the first weekend in December with the Christmas Walk and House Tour. The walk begins as Santa Lucia, Sweden’s symbol of the season, arrives on the courthouse lawn by horse-drawn carriage to light the Great Tree. Here comes Santa to open up his festive gingerbread house and invite the gathered children to share their Christmas wishes with him.

Carolers bring a serene quality to the event, while the smell and taste of roasted chestnuts, Swedish cookies and hot apple cider envelopes the crowd. The annual House Tour brings the splendor of Geneva’s homes to life. With help from the area’s most talented designers, holiday finery decorates neighborhoods and brings cheer and merriment to all.

Group tours of Geneva are available through the Geneva Chamber of Commerce. Dressed in traditional historic garb, a guide will take visitors through the city’s historic district showcasing the beauty of the refurbished storefronts and Victorian homes while sharing the history of the area.

The Geneva History Center opened a new 17,000 square foot facility in June 2004. Since 1965 the center has been working to preserve and research Geneva’s past and educating those interested in learning more about the history of the city.
