Outdoor recreation opportunities are bursting through the seams of Geneva.
Biking and hiking trails provide a beautiful landscape for outdoor enthusiasts. The Fox River Trail is a testament to the magnificence of the Geneva area. Following along the banks of the Fox River, this smooth-surface trail provides ideal conditions for biking, hiking, jogging and even cross-country skiing. Fishing and canoeing are accessible from several points on the trail and picnic areas are scattered throughout.
The Great Western Trail is brimming with wildlife. Many birds such as Blue Heron and ducks raise their young in the wetlands. This quiet, limestone trail stretches about 17 miles and is perfect for cycling. For winter fun, snowmobiling is permitted along the trail. Crossing over the Fox River, the 12-mile Virgil L. Gilman Nature Trail is a limestone and asphalt trail surrounded by native prairie and other wild plant life.
Right off the Fox River Trail is the Tekawitha Woods Forest preserve and Nature Center. The trails in the preserve are open year-round offering visitors the opportunity to see nature through the seasons. The nature center provides a host of displays and exhibits, activities for children as well as a nature library and bird feeding station.
The Fabyan Forest Preserve, Villa Museum and Japanese Garden are also reachable from the Fox River Trail. The forest preserve brings thousands to jog, fish and bicycle along its trails while the garden offers a beautiful setting for weddings, portraits or as a place of meditation. The museum displays many unique and historical artifacts.
Once owned by George and Nelle Fabyan, the Forest Preserve District of Kane County now owns 235 acres of this more than 600-acre estate.
