Education

The Geneva Community Unit School District 304 totals about 5,700 students attending its eight schools. The mission of the district is to provide an education that will challenge students to learn and develop to their full potential, in order to become successful members of society.

This dedication directly reflects in the outstanding test scores and awards coming out of District 304. In the 2004-2005 school year Geneva students exceeded the state’s averages on all sections of the Illinois Goals Assessment Program. Also, the average A.C.T. score for the District was higher than that of the state and four National Merit Scholarship Commended Students and 72 Illinois State Scholars were named. To add to the achievement, there is a second middle school located at 1357 Viking Drive.

Geneva High School boasts a graduation rate of 92 percent. In addition to an excellent academic program, many extracurricular activities are available. Geneva High offers 16 leadership and social activities, 16 academic activities and a number of athletic teams. Students at the middle school level can also enjoy a host of activities and team sports.

A few private schools also serve the community. St. Peter Elementary School provides a Roman-Catholic education for grades pre-kindergarten through eighth with an enrollment nearing 500. Faith Christian Elementary and Junior High brings a Christian education to students in first through eighth grade. Also, Grace Christian Academy offers pre-kindergarten through sixth grade.

Many community colleges and four-year schools sit within 30 miles of Geneva. Waubonsee Community College in Sugar Grove opened its doors in 1966. Enrollment has grown from its initial 1,603 students to currently more than 10,000 students each semester. This two-year institution also has extension locations in Aurora on Galena Boulevard and at the Rush-Copley Medical Center, making their programs accessible to many communities. WCC also utilizes other facilities at nearly 40 locations to help serve its increasing enrollment.

About 40 minutes away in DeKalb, lies the main campus of Northern Illinois University (NIU). Enrolling more than 25,000 students annually, this state university offers a wide range of program options from undergraduate to doctoral degrees. Undergrads have 52 majors to choose from and graduate students have 74 options. Ten Ph.D. programs are also available. With outreach centers in Rockford, Oregon, Naperville and Hoffman Estates, more students will be able to access an NIU education.

Wheaton College, North Central College, Aurora University and Benedictine University are all within 18 miles of Geneva. Offering a private, liberal arts education these schools have all been ranked highly by U.S. News & World Report. Small class sizes and highly qualified faculty allow students to gain more from their classes.

The Geneva Public Library is a widely used resource. From extensive media options to activities and programs, patrons have a wide variety of knowledge at their disposal. Nearly 170,000 items are available, including about 142,000 books, almost 300 periodicals and approximately 17,600 audio-visual items. Library-goers are able to borrow items from other libraries in the DuPage Library System - 19,423 were borrowed from other libraries according to the 2004-2005 Annual Report. A number of meeting and study rooms exist. Geneva Public Library brings books to those who are unable to physically come to the library with the Home Library Service.
