Glenview’s “Grandpa’s Place” is clearly an affair of the heart and a spirited tribute to all the Grandpa’s across time. Located at 1868 Prairie Street on a corner across from the Glenview Metra station, this so Irish restaurant and bar is imbued with warmth, character, friendliness and old-fashioned quality. Regulars and first-timers come from all over Chicagoland. Often times they drop in after wandering the boutiques of downtown Glenview, meet friends to enjoy a refreshing respite on the train ride home or come to enjoy birthday and other special occasion celebrations.

With a deep history that goes back to the 1960s, Grandpa’s at the Depot was purchased in 1977 by a family named Dwyer. Aged racing sheets lining the Derby Room walls lay testament to the bar having likely been the biggest wire service in the northern suburbs. Vintage black and white family photos abound, including a portrait of the “Grandpa” of Grandpa’s Place — a turn of the century picture of old William Maher, Tom Dwyer’s maternal great grandfather.

Grandpa’s is so much about comfort. There is the welcoming and energetic way of the inevitably long-time employees, the warm weather delight in patio seating under graceful honey locust trees, the almost sybaritic pleasure of seating in the library with its comfy leather couches and small fireplace and always at Grandpa’s there’s the hum of conversing friends.


A spirit of fun and celebration is high at Grandpa’s too. St. Paddy’s is wrapped in four days of celebration, the place sparkles at Christmas as believers are delivered from the Metra Santa Train, a colorful Octoberfest heralds the height of autumn, and at least once a month guests clap and dance in the parlor to live folk and rock and roll. Every Wednesday at 9:00 p.m. is open mic night with drummer, guitarist, pianist and bassist — no keyboard on site. Grandpa’s is also a family environment and the Friday Night Fish ‘n Chips offers all the ocean perch and cod you can eat. This includes soup or salad and fries, hash browns or baked potato. When you ask around, folks seem challenged to choose their favorites among Grandpa’s diverse menu choices, but Tiffany — a bartender who’s been at Grandpa’s nine years — hears the Blackened Jack Burger, Pulled Pork and long-time secret family barbecue sauce mentioned again and again.

Quesadillas, chicken wings and potato skins with bacon and cheese are among numerous appetizers. Chili and a soup of the day warm the heart, and the fresh salads — Thai, Caesar, tuna or grilled shrimp to name just some — are scrumptious too.
