
Herrin,
Illinois, a community nestled in southern Illinois, is home to almost
11,000 residents who enjoy an ideal quality of life, from the years of
raising young families to the retirement years.
Herrin was incorporated in 1900. Like it's city founders, residents today have a unique sense of pride in their community. This is seen in the cooperative efforts of the city government, the Chamber of Commerce, the industrial/business community, the schools, churches and service organizations. Herrin is governed by an aldermanic form of city government. As well as providing police and fire protection, the city supports the Herrin City Library, develops opportunity for business and industrial growth, and helps to beautify the community.
Herrin's religious community represents many faiths with over thirty places of worship. Many civic organizations supply, the philanthropic needs of the community.
AMERICAN PRIDE
Herrinites take pride in the community's history. This is displayed on holidays when American flags adorn Park Avenue, when the townspeople watch a homecoming parade and when veterans have special ceremonies: around the Doughboy Memorial - a symbol of freedom and remembrance of those who fought for our land.

The housing market in Herrin is varied and diverse. Single family and multi-family dwellings are available for rent or purchase.
The number of single family residencies for sale, at any given time, is approximately 60 houses, ranging in price from $12,000 to $300,000 This includes a range of older smaller bungalows to new construction in new subdivisions. Rental property is also abundant in Herrin. Several new duplex units and other multi-family units have recently been built to add to the already existing apartment units in town. Apartment buildings are spread throughout the town giving a neighborhood feel to rental living. Herrin has housing to meet everyone's needs.

Herrin boasts of beautiful, well kept city park for swimming, tennis,
get-togethers, ball games and enjoying the scenery. Adjacent to the
park, a new multi-purpose recreational complex with a quarter mile all
weather track and a one mile lighted walking trail is like no others in
the area. In addition, Herrin is close to a number of golf courses and
within 25 miles of seven state parks, seven major recreational lakes
and the Shawnee National Forest.
HERRINFESTA ITALIANA
Herrinfesta Italiana is a celebration of herrin. This festival provides a sense of community sprit, as well as homecoming for former residents ad a welcome to travelers from all over the Midwest. The Festa lasts for five days in and around the Herrin Civic Center on Memorial Day weekend. Activities include a showcase of entertainment, authentic Italian food, an art gallery, a carnival, athletic competitions and fun for all ages. The festival, spotlighting Herrin's rich Italian heritage, draws over 40,000 people to the community. The event was founded in 1991. Major underwriters and sponsors contribute to the success of the Festa. More than 200 volunteers work before and during the prestigious festival that is finely tuned and orchestrated throughout the year to prepare for the next Festa. Proceeds benefit the Herrin Chamber of Commerce, the Herrin Civic Center, the Herrin-Energy Lions Club and a number of community organizations that participate in individual events.

A wide continuum of health care options are provided by area providers
and health care facilities.
Herrin Hospital was the first hospital to be owned and operated by the organization that today is known as Southern Illinois Healthcare The hospital has 90 beds and a 13 bed skilled care unit. Over 90 physicians are on staff. The hospital offers a 24 hour emergency department, a modern intensive care unit and up to date surgical suites renovated in 1994. In 1997, Herrin Hospital and The Rehab Institute of Chicago entered into a partnership for rehabilitation services, including | a 19 bed Acute Rehab Unit.
Nursing home services are offered at six facilities in Herrin, with a total capacity of 468 residents.

Schooling in Herrin is provided by the public Herrin Community Unit School District, and Parochial Catholic and Protestant schools. Opportunities for further education are offered nearby at John A. Logan College and Southern Illinois University.
Herrin schools offer a wide range of academic opportunities and programs, incorporating up-to-date technology, which prepares students for a variety of career choices. The Herrin Unit School District offers special education, Title I, and gifted/accelerated services to students who have special needs. A dedicated teaching staff offers a strong basic curriculum and developmental programs in fine arts and physical education at all levels. In addition, the district provides extracurricular activities in sports, music, art, drama and academic competitions .
Students consistently perform above the state and national averages on national standardized achievements tests and state assessments.

A number of industries have called Herrin "home" for over
fifty years. These include Primex, formerly Olin Corporation, Maytag,
and Diagraph Corporation. Container Stapling, Orpak-Stone
Corporation, The Sollami Company, KRN Tool and Camarato
Distributing are also long time industrial residents of Herrin.
OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDUSTRIAL DEVELOPMENT
The Chamber of Commerce offers complete information about opportunities for industrial development. The Chamber city government and community leaders have developed a new business/industrial park, infrastructure complete, for immediate development. Herrin and the local utility companies. CIPS, have joined efforts by developing architectural renderings of a ready to go building which can be constructed within 90 to 120 days on a "ready to go site". This building can be constructed for all individual industries needs. In addition, existing sites are available. All of this exists within city limits and the Herrin Enterprise Zone.
Herrin is four minutes from the Interstate Highway System. In addition, industries have access to rail service, trucking companies with nearby dispatch centers and a local airport. ( also see locator map )
