Many of the major roads discovered in the Village have developed and evolved over time. The tollway system was constructed in the late 1950s as a means of travel to, from and around Chicago. The completion of Interstate 90 through the area greatly opened up access to the burgeoning Village of Hoffman Estates.

When it comes to the arterial roadway system in the Village, several major state and county highways make traveling locally easy. Since the Village’s inception, its main roads have grown from narrow, two-lane rural roads into multi-lane, divided suburban thoroughfares. Routes 58 (Golf Road), 59 (Sutton Road), 62 (Algonquin Road) 68 (Roselle Road) and 72 (Higgins Road) round out some of the available options for road travel in the area.

“One unique element in Hoffman Estates is that the major roads are not under the jurisdiction of the Village,” explained Mike Hankey, Director of the Transportation and Engineering Division at the Village. “The need for future improvements to these arterial road intersections in order to improve the traffic carrying capacity will be coordinated through the State of Illinois or Cook County. This results in the need for cooperative and good working relationships with these agencies.”

Hankey continues, adding that, “Road improvements alone will not be enough to serve the travel demands of the Village and the region. Significant improvement in public transportation solutions will be needed as well.”

Currently, several Pace bus routes run through Hoffman Estates, providing affordable public travel to a variety of area destinations. Park-and-ride sites, business parks and offices, educational institutions, major shopping centers and St. Alexius Medical Center are among some of the destinations provided through this service.

Extending back in time to the late 1980s, the Village was a leading supporter for the establishment of commuter rail service along the local EJ&E freight line. Along its path, which travels around and through the Chicago area, the EJ&E intersects with a number of radial rail lines leading into Chicago—many of which are utilized by Metra commuter rail service.

“Through much regional planning, separate transit proposals for the EJ&E and the I-90 Corridor were merged into a single project known as the STAR line,” stated Hankey. “The Village has been a strong proponent of Metra’s STAR Line proposal to provide commuter rail service along I-90 from O’Hare to Hoffman Estates, and then south along the EJ&E to Joliet.”

Plans for a potential area station are included in the Village Comprehensive Plan, with feeder bus service envisioned to serve these needs. For now, Hoffman Estates residents can utilize several nearby Metra stations, including the Schaumburg, Barrington and Palatine stations, along with CTA stations.

In addition to all this, there is a more immediate demand for local transit options that will provide links to Metra stations, the Northwest Transportation Center and further destinations located in and around the Village. The transportation needs of older residents, those enduring a disability and community members at lower income levels require consideration as well. Most recently, the Village began development of a comprehensive bicycle plan designed to serve both the recreational and transportation needs of Hoffman Estates.

“Working with regional transportation partners to create a comprehensive approach and plan to implement roadway and transit improvements remains a primary goal of the Village,” expressed Hankey.

Supplementing the list of available transportation options, efficient air travel is within easy reach of Hoffman Estates, with the busy O’Hare International Airport located 10 miles from the Village. Schaumburg Regional and DuPage airports are also close by.
