The history of the Alexian Brothers in the Chicagoland area began in 1866 when a small hospital was established to provide care to cholera victims. The presence of the Alexian Brothers in the area grew rapidly, and 100 years after their arrival, a new hospital was constructed in Elk Grove Village to meet the needs of its growing population. The network took the opportunity to expand its services in the Chicago area with the acquisition of the Hoffman Estates Medical Center (today’s St. Alexius Medical Center) and the Woodland Psychiatric Hospital (now the Alexian Brothers Behavioral Health Hospital) in 1999. Hoffman Estates Medical Center and Woodland Psychiatric opened in Hoffman Estates under different ownership in 1979 and 1990 respectively.

St. Alexius Medical Center is now a 331-bed, acute-care community hospital that has been serving the northwest suburbs for three decades.

St. Alexius

The hospital’s knowledgeable medical staff exceeds 1,000 physicians representing more than 60 medical and surgical specialties. St. Alexius is also well-equipped with a dedicated hospital staff of nearly 2,000 employees. Every year, the medical center treats more than a quarter of a million patients within its advanced facilities.

In 2008, St. Alexius Medical Center was the recipient of the American Stroke Association’s Get With the Guidelines—Stroke Gold Performance Achievement Award. The hospital has developed a comprehensive system for quick and efficient diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients who have been admitted into the Emergency Department. Also, in June of 2007, the hospital received certification from the Joint Commission as a Primary Stroke Center after recognizing its fine campaign geared towards raising the standards of advanced stroke care.
