The area is very fortunate to have the presence and influence of Sue Salach, a published author of “If I Walked In Her Shoes” and “Along Comes Grandpa: Caregiving Resources for People in the Real World”, as well as a national speaker for seniors, caregivers and healthcare and business professionals. “I grew up in the Hoffman Estates area and know that not many people move away from the area,” said Salach.
In fact, according to the United States Census Bureau, the number of seniors aged 65 years and older has grown from four percent of the population in 2000 to more than 12 percent of Hoffman Estates’ population today. “As those first ‘settlers’ in Hoffman Estates age and their children age, this number will continue to grow,” stated Salach.

When looking at how senior services, programs and facilities have transformed over the years, Salach explained, “When I started in the geriatric healthcare field over 15 years ago, The Devonshire, then known as The Benchmark, was really the only senior housing in Hoffman Estates. Back then, it was more for younger seniors in their 60s. In fact, the concept of assisted living didn’t even exist back then, and it wasn’t until about five years ago that the state began to require licensing for this type of housing.”
Today, the Village offers a variety of housing options designed for the senior population. The Devonshire of Hoffman Estates has been a part of the Hoffman Estates community for years, offering seniors options for independent and personalized assisted living. Residents have a choice between studio, one- and two-bedroom living, all of which are equipped with emergency response services. The Devonshire, which is located near St. Alexius Medical Center, is furnished with a number of on-site amenities, and is in proximity to such resources as a golf course, shopping, dining and attractions of all kinds.

Brighton Gardens of Hoffman Estates is ideally located near excellent shopping and dining establishments and the picturesque Poplar Creek Golf Course, providing residents with plenty of conveniences. The facility offers a selection of lifestyle, service and care options, suitable for each individual.
Poplar Creek Village is a modern 121-unit, two-story senior residential complex that has added further options for the senior living community in Hoffman Estates. In addition to wonderful amenities and on-site safety and security, residents have access to a list of regularly scheduled events and activities, such as holiday parties, bingo, bunco, afternoon and evening card games, fitness classes, seminars, various clubs and much more.
Another choice is the neighboring Friendship Village, a continuing care retirement community for seniors aged 62 and better. Residential living, assisted living and skilled nursing are all found within this one campus, which has been serving area seniors for more than three decades. Friendship Village stands as the premier retirement community in the state to have earned accreditation from the Continuing Care Accreditation Commission and the only facility to be reaccredited three times.

In addition to these exceptional senior living facilities, Hoffman Estates is home to a variety of senior services and programs. St. Alexius has incorporated the Alexian Brothers Older Adult Services, a division that was created in order to provide a continuum of care for seniors, including social services, educational programming on a selection of topics and comprehensive healthcare. The Institute has established the Gold Circle membership program for adults aged 50+, which offers seniors monthly educational programs, social trips, fitness programs, free health screenings and more for only $12 a year.
The Hoffman Estates Park District has created its own Adult Activities Center at the CCIA, and the Village has instituted the Disabled and Seniors Commission, which works diligently for the interests of the area’s senior population. “Having been a past member of the commission,” explained Salach, “I know that the committee has advocated over the years to expand the services available to the seniors in the community.”
