Homer Township Open Space

farm land

Homer Township is rich in its history, educational opportunities, volunteer spirit, business potential, scenic and natural resources. We have been fortunate to enjoy an elevated quality of life. However, in light of the rapid growth of the community, it has become increasingly important to set aside open land that can be preserved for the future of all residents — people, wildlife and nature alike — in order to preserve the very qualities that make our township so desirable.

In 1999 via a citizen-based initiative, the community established an Open Space Program approved by referenda and funded by a bond put forward over 15 years. Over 250 acres of land have been acquired to date. In April 2002 the Township Board formed the Open Space Land Stewardship Committee (OSLS) consisting of volunteers who guide the future planning, funding and management of these parcels. Although the majority of the parcels continue to be farmed, enabling the best short-term management practices for the land, various plans are currently underway for long-term provisions of the sites. Guided by various laws, financial resources, and with input from the community, the plans encompass a wide range of interests.

Join us as a host of volunteers get underway with the initial plans and projects scheduled to begin this year. The Trantina Farm site will serve as a living history farm, a cultural center and an environmental interpretive center. The 50-acre parcel will offer a wide variety of uses such as historical aspects, picnic areas, paths, community events, educational programming, environmental preservation, gardening, recreation and tourism. The Homer Township Board and OSLS Committee are proud to have a part in preserving one of the most priceless possessions of our people and to know that when the congestion of an ever-increasing population will have changed everything, these special places will remain.
