Education in Flossmoor is built on a tradition of excellence.
Younger students are served by District 161, encompassing Parker Junior
High, Flossmoor Hills Elementary, Heather Hills Elementary and Western
Avenue Elementary. Approximately 2,600 students attend Homewood-Flossmoor
High School, serving the villages of Flossmoor, Homewood, and portions
of Chicago Heights, Glenwood, Hazel Crest and Olympia Fields. Homewood-Flossmoor
High School has won the U.S. Department of Educations Blue Ribbon
Schools award twice, most recently in 1996. Award-winning private schools offer Flossmoor residents alternative choices for education. Infant Jesus of Prague, designated a Blue Ribbon School, serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade, while children in grades one through six may attend Flossmoor Montessori School. Marion Catholic High School, yet another Blue Ribbon School, provides a top-notch educational program complemented by quality teachers and a wide array of extracurricular activities. For those pursuing higher education, Governors State University
in University Park and Prairie State College in Chicago Heights provide
outstanding continuing education opportunities for Flossmoor residents.
Both schools are accredited and offer a broad range of classes and degrees
for traditional and non-traditional students alike. There are endless opportunities for fun as a resident of Flossmoor! The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District owns 33 park sites and maintains 220 acres of land. In addition to the plethora of programs and classes, the Homewood-Flossmoor Park District sponsors Family Fun Fest on the Fourth of July; the Fine Arts Fair each spring; and the Starry Night Concert series, where families and couples toting lawn chairs and blankets enjoy music under the stars. For those who want to exercise their minds, the Flossmoor
Public Library is home to an extensive collection of adult and youth books,
as well as thousands of compact disks, audiocassettes and books on tape.
Computers with Internet access are available for public use, as well as
a microcomputer room with Macintosh and IBM-compatible computers, color
printers and a large assortment of software. Special activities such as
preschool story times, youth and adult Summer Reading Clubs and "Coffee
and Conversation," a book discussion group, guarantees a good time for
all. Flossmoor residents take advantage of quality, dependable healthcare right in their own neighborhood. South Suburban Hospital, a 270-bed acute care facility located in nearby Hazel Crest, provides patients with a wide range of inpatient, outpatient, diagnostic and ambulatory services that utilize state-of-the-art medical technology. American Day Treatment Center in Flossmoor, affiliated with the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation, provides a comprehensive psychiatric day program for adolescents and adults. Other reputable hospitals, all within a short drive from Flossmoor, include Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, Olympia Fields Osteopathic Medical Center and St. James Hospital Medical Center in Chicago Heights.
