Curriculum Vitae

Residents need look no farther than their own backyard for one of the best liberal arts education in the country. Totaled, the University of Chicago supports an undergraduate college, four graduate divisions, the six professional schools, in addition to libraries, laboratories, museums, clinics, a school, and an academic press.

Its history is ripe with the best of American ideals. Founded by John D. Rockefeller, its students today live out the motto he stamped on its culture: "Let knowledge grow from more to more; And so be human life enriched." No less than 74 Nobel Prize winners have been faculty members, students, or researchers at the University; six Laureates are currently on the faculty. Faculty honors include 123 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 41 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 13 recipients of a MacArthur Fellowship (commonly known as a "genius grant"), eight recipients of the National Medal of Science, and two Pulitzer Prize winners.graphic

Students rack up the accolades, too. According to university officials, in the past five years, Chicago undergraduates have won six Rhodes scholarships, four Marshall scholarships, three Truman scholarships, three Churchill scholarships, and two Gates Cambridge scholarships. Graduate students have won the most Fulbright-Hayes Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad.

Learners here have 51 undergraduate concentrations from which to choose their studies; the four graduate divisions, biological sciences, humanities, physical sciences, and social sciences, offer nearly 80 degree programs.
