Illinois River Area Tourism and Lodging

Accommodations in the area are numerous. Large chain hotels and inns are located on the I-80 corridor, all of which are within a 10-minute drive. With five campgrounds to choose from, thousands of visitors stay in the area to enjoy the great outdoors. Select campgrounds offer primitive camping, while others offer electric and water hookups, public showers, boat launches, fishing, hunting, hiking and swimming, as well as organized activities and social outings.

In addition to the many natural resources (from state parks to forest preserves and wildlife areas) afforded by the area, both Seneca and Marseilles hold festivals and events year-round. From riverside markets to festivals that celebrate holidays and local heritage, there is always something to experience.

A variety of attractions showcase the spirit of the Illinois River Area. Situated on the North bank of the Illinois River at the South end of Main Street (in Marseilles), the Middle Eastern Conflicts Memorial Wall is a tribute to those soldiers who have lost their lives. The Memorial Wall was dedicated on June 19th, 2004.

During World War II, the Landing Ship Tank (LST) was built in Seneca. Thousands of people came to this area to work and live during the war. The historical shipyard is still visible from the South side of the Illinois River just East of the Seneca, Illinois River Bridge.

The I & M Canal is the centerpiece of the National Heritage Corridor. The 100-mile urban cultural park was created in 1984 to preserve this Illinois landmark and to provide the public with a variety of historical, recreational, and natural resources. Visitors can follow the I & M Canal State Trail beginning at Rockdale along the old towpath to LaSalle and experience 61.5 miles of scenic views of the canal and the Des Plaines and Illinois rivers. Interpretive programs and information centers are located at various locations along the trail. The I & M Canal Swing Bridge crosses the canal about one block west of Main Street in Marseilles.
