Illinois River Area Parks and Recreation

Illini State Park is situated along the banks of the Illinois River just across the Marseilles River Bridge. The park offers campsites with showers, electricity, playgrounds, a new public boat launch, shelters with grills and fireplaces, and public bathrooms. There are also several trails that wind through the park. Just west of the river bridge, a scenic lookout provides a breathtaking view of the water. A small ice-skating rink and sledding hill are popular sites when weather permits. Two cabins are available to rent at Illini State Park.

Crotty Park is situated in the heart of Seneca. A recent renovation to the park has created an excellent area to picnic with a small walk trail and a beautiful brick shelter with picnic, electric and bathroom facilities. A new playground adds to the adventure for children. There are also areas for bocce ball, volleyball and several other field sports.

The historical Illinois & Michigan Canal State Trail offers 61 miles of paths and is a multi-purpose trail developed and maintained by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. It stretches from Brandon Road in Rockdale and goes through Seneca and Marseilles, ending at LaSalle Peru’s Lock 14. This historic canal was built from 1836 to 1848. It was created to serve as an all-water route between the east coast and the Gulf of Mexico to transport goods and passengers. Today the canal provides a great adventure for hikers, bicyclists, cross-country skiers, joggers or snowmobiling. This trail has an abundance of natural beauty and wildlife. Signage along the canal explains the many historical sites and features along the way.
