Joliet Location

Metra Train

For residents who want to work in Chicago, yet crave the affordability and convenience of the suburbs, Joliet is an ideal place to live. Two major arteries run from Chicago - Interstate 55 (on the north and west) and Interstate 80, which bisects the city and connects I-57 (east of Joliet) to the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94). Additionally, Joliet is trisected and crossed by U.S. Highways 30, 6, 59, Routes 7 and 52, and has easy access to I-88 (The Ronald Reagan Memorial Highway) and I-355, making the commute to Chicago and its surrounding suburbs fast and easy.

The I-355 South Extension Project will be complete and open in the 4th Quarter of 2007. This new extension, which will be less than ten minutes from the City Center, will extend I-355 by about 12.5 miles. The aim of this significant project is to quickly connect the rapidly expanding Will County to other Chicagoland areas, as well as to reduce travel times for commuters.

For those who frequently travel the skies, Joliet is only 40 miles from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport and even closer to Midway Airport. Joliet Regional Airport, situated just 10 minutes from the City Center, is a unique local facility accommodating most commuter aircraft. Lewis Airport, close by in Romeoville, also covers the Joliet area, serving both small aircraft and private jets.

Chicago Ship Canal

Railroad services offer both commuter and freight transportation to Joliet’s residential and business communities. The Metra commuter rail system connects Joliet residents to downtown Chicago, offering over 25 commuter trains between the two cities daily. In addition, Amtrak provides rail service to cities throughout the nation. The Elgin, Joliet, and Eastern Railroad moves freight in and out of Joliet.

Commuters also benefit from the Pace local bus service throughout Joliet and the surrounding area. The Illinois Deep Waterway, or Chicago Ship Canal, is used to transport bulk shipments of a variety of manufactured goods.
