Location and Transportation

Lake County is favorably situated along the shores of Lake Michigan, between the lively cities of Chicago and Milwaukee — both a quick one-hour drive away.

map

This northeastern Illinois region is adjacent to the Wisconsin border to the north and Cook County and the greater Chicagoland metropolitan area to the south, while running alongside Lake Michigan to the east.

Its ideal location has provided both residents and businesses with a number of commuter options, making Lake County a significant transportation center. A large network of roadways wind throughout the county, with major interstates 94 and 294 stretching north and south, connecting Lake County traffic to both Chicago and Milwaukee. North-south drivers also have access to Routes 12, 41, 45 and 59, while east-west commuters can easily reach Routes 22, 60, 120, 132, 137, 173 and 176.

The Lake County Department of Transportation is continually ensuring the quality of the area’s roadways through a number of maintenance and resurfacing projects. Current improvement plans include the widening of Butterfield Road from Route 176 to Route 137, the last installation of the 10-year expansion of the road from two lanes to four lanes; the extension of Cedar Lake Road from Illinois Route 60 to Town Line Road; restoration of the bridge on Buffalo Grove Road at Indian Creek; and the widening of Sunset Avenue.

info

Air travel can be found nearby at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, one of the world’s busiest airports; and Milwaukee’s General Mitchell Field, situated less than a one-hour drive from the county. Chicago’s Midway International Airport is also an alternative for commercial flights, while the local Waukegan Regional Airport is the site for private and corporate aircraft.

Additional transportation is available through the Pace bus service, offering links to local sites and nearby communities; and the Metra passenger rail service, affording a connection from Lake County to Chicago’s Union Station, with several stops in between. Through Metra, riders can access the nationwide Amtrak rail service as well.
