Arts and Entertainment

Though Lake County is positioned near the cities of Chicago and Milwaukee, its cultural avenues are ample and all its own, presenting residents and visitors with mixed visual, musical and theatrical arts offerings.

Located in Waukegan, the Genesee Theatre recently underwent a massive $23 million renovation, still standing as a venue for world-class artists including musical performances, comedic acts and Broadway theatricals. On top of this historic venue, Ravinia Festival, the oldest outdoor music festival, not only in the country, but on the this continent, is a site for top-rate entertainment. Situated in Highland Park, Ravinia Festival draws in more than 600,000 visitors to around 150 events yearly. Comprised of an open-air pavilion seating 3,200-plus on the lawn, the 450-seat Bennett Gordon Hall and the 850-seat prairie-style Martin Theatre (the sole standing building from the site’s original 1904 establishment), the venue’s offerings span all genres of music, dance and theatre.

Fantastic theatrical productions can be found through several companies, including: the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire, putting on five musicals every year in its intimate facility; the P.M.& L. Theatre in Antioch; the Kirk Players Community Theatre in Libertyville; the Gurnee Theatre Company; and the Bowen Park Theatre Company in Waukegan. Further entertainment in the county is supplied by Waukegan’s Symphony Orchestra and Concert Choir, the Great American Chorus and the Bowen Park Opera Company.

For the visual arts lover, the Antioch Fine Arts Gallery is the ticket. This not-profit gallery exhibits work by local artists, presenting the best of the area’s cultural diversity.
