WAUCONDA

house

Established in 1877, Wauconda has grown into a community of 12,417 people, a number that is expected to exceed 13,800 by 2011.

Home values continue to be on the rise, with a median home value of $151,181 in 2000 that had risen to $263,455 in 2006. That value is anticipated to hit $332,667 by 2011. A golf course, six parks, horseback riding at Dragon’s Lair Stables and the 310-acre Bangs Lake — an ideal site for swimming, boating, fishing and other water sports — can all be found in the charming Wauconda area. The Wauconda Unit District #118 serves nearly 4,000 students in its four elementary schools and high school.

Chicago and its surrounding suburbs can be reached quickly by one of the area’s three major thoroughfares: U.S. Route 12 and Illinois Routes 59 and 176. www.wauconda-il.gov

WAUKEGAN

The community is growing by leaps and bounds, both residentially and economically. A number of new housing developments are in development, and residents have a choice of everything from luxury apartments to custom-built homes. Waukegan’s downtown is thriving, thanks to the August 2003 downtown and lakefront redevelopment plan. Waukegan has become the ideal place for living or visiting, with a large selection of dining and shopping areas and entertainment spots, including the popular Genesee Theatre, and much more. The Waukegan Regional Airport offers service for private aircraft, the Pace bus service connects Waukegan to nearby communities and Metra’s Chicago and North Western/North Line provides commuter rail service to and from Chicago and several stops in between. www.waukeganweb.net

WINTHROP HARBOR

Recreation is abundant in Winthrop Harbor, due in large part to its location along the shores of Lake Michigan. The village is home to North Point Marina, a site that has been recognized as the largest marina on the Great Lakes. The marina is equipped with more than 1,500 boat slips, free boat launching, two large beaches and top shoreline fishing. Hiking trails, bicycle and walking paths, and several parks — notably the 38-acre Village Park — can be found within Winthrop Harbor. Additional sites include the Schlader Recreation Center and the area’s Skate Park for those who enjoy skateboarding. Commuters can reach Chicago’s Loop in under 60 miles through the Metra Chicago and North Western/North Line rail service or nearby Interstate 94. www.winthropharbor.com

ZION

An ideal site for both residents and businesses, Zion, home to nearly 30,000, sits along Lake Michigan and is the site for beautiful beaches, golf courses, 17 parks, a lively downtown business district and a number of events throughout the year. Bringing in thousands of people from all over the Midwest region, Zion is host to popular events including the Nostalgia Days Classic Car Show, the Jet Ski Championship and the Festival of Lights holiday celebration, to name a few. Primary education can be found through Zion District #6, while secondary education is provided through the Zion-Benton Township High School District #126. In addition, six private, parochial schools can be accessed within Zion for those looking for an alternative to public schooling. Zion is also the proud site of the Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA) at Midwestern Regional Medical Center. www.cityofzion.com
