The Village of Lake Zurich has garnered many accolades over the years and is a lovely area. Selected by Frommer’s as one of the “top 100 best places to raise a family in the U.S.” and by Business Week as one of the “top 25 best affordable suburbs in the country,” it is clear that this Village is a great place to live.
Located in Lake County, Lake Zurich is approximately 37 miles from the downtown area of Chicago. The Village is home to over 19,000 people, as well as a sparkling 250-acre lake (Lake Zurich). Covering an area of 6.75 square miles, the land was settled in the 1830s and officially incorporated September 19, 1896. The area also served as a popular resort community in the early 20th century.
Lake Zurich has collected multiple awards, including the Clean Air Silver Award from Metropolitan’s Mayor Caucus. For the past nine years the Village has also received the Tree City USA award, and for the past 18 years running it has earned a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.
In 2006 the Lake Zurich Police Department received national accreditation from The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA), assuring that they met with the exceptionally high standards set by law enforcement professionals. (About 6% of police departments nationally are accredited.) Also, the Village of Lake Zurich Fire Department/Emergency Management Agency has blazed a new trail, beginning a Volunteer Corps that will function as a support to first responders and other residents in case of a local or large-scale emergency.
With good housing values and solid community base, Lake Zurich is a wonderful suburb. Its proximity to Chicago and overall appeal make it a desirable place to live and work.
Surrounding Area
The Lake Zurich area in Lake County holds within it several other communities including Kildeer, Hawthorn Woods, North Barrington, Deer Park and Long Grove. The Villages are primarily situated within Ela Township, which is named for an early settler.
Located in the southwest corner of Lake County, the Village of Kildeer is south/southeast of Lake Zurich. Incorporated in 1958, it is home to nearly 3,600 people. Kildeer is known for its custom homes and currently has approximately 1,200 residences. A scenic community, much of the Village still has a “wooded” appearance and there are also a variety of ponds and lakes located within its borders.
Hawthorn Woods was incorporated on March 10th in 1958 and borders Lake Zurich to the north. With a population just over 6,000 the Village is primarily residential and most of the 2,000-plus homes are each located on about an acre of land. The community has over 80 acres of parkland in its nine public parks. The Village is home to Hawthorn Woods Country Club as well as a brand new aquatic center which just opened in 2007.
North Barrington—Lake Zurich’s neighbor to the west—was an unincorporated area until fairly recent times. In 1959, residents voted the Village into existence, and today it has about 3,000 people living within its borders. Although fairly small at a bit less than five square miles, the Village includes approximately 1,100 homes.
The Village of Deer Park was incorporated in 1957 and has a population of just over 3,000. The Village recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, complete with an antique tractor display, square dancing, horse rides, a petting zoo and more. Maureen Pratscher, the Anniversary Chair (and Village Trustee) said that the theme for the event was tied into the area’s roots as a farming community.
Long Grove is a very well-known neighbor to the south of Lake Zurich. People settled in this area as far back as 1830, and the Village has retained a sense of charm from that era that remains today with its quaint stores and small-town atmosphere. A very popular shopping spot, Long Grove offers over 120 businesses in its Historic District, including shops, restaurants and galleries. The Village also holds an annual Chocolate Festival in May which highlights the famed Long Grove Confectionary and other specialty stores in the business district. June brings nearly 50,000 visitors each year for the “Strawberry Fest,” and an “Apple Fest” is held in October.
A collection of six villages, the Lake Zurich area offers residential living in a natural setting with continued growth, a strong sense of community and plenty of amenities.
