Strategically located approximately 35 miles northwest of busy downtown Chicago, Lake Zurich’s position in southwestern Lake County affords its residents and
businesses quiet suburban living within easy reach of excellent educational institutions, top medical facilities, extensive shopping centers and a variety of cultural outlets.
Immediate access to Chicago and its surrounding suburbs is made simple through major local thoroughfares in the Lake Zurich community. Mainly, Rand Road (U.S. Highway 12) provides a route for north-south traffic, while Main Street (State Highway 22) runs east-west, linking the area with the Tri-State Tollway (Interstate 294). An abundance of further roadway options are available surrounding the Village, as well.
An additional transportation option for reaching downtown Chicago and its suburban communities is through the Metra commuter rail service. Residents can reach the Union Pacific Northwest Line at the nearby Barrington station – a mere five-mile drive.
And for those seeking transport out of the state, or even the country, Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport is situated 25 miles from Lake Zurich, while a 48-mile drive will bring flyers to Chicago’s Midway Airport. Further air services can be accessed at Milwaukee’s General Mitchell International Airport, 55 miles from Lake Zurich, with private and corporate flight availability found at Wheeling’s Palwaukee Airport and the Waukegan Airport.
Downtown Development
After a decade of downtown planning in Lake Zurich, construction finally got underway in May of 2006. Redevelopment of the area’s downtown, which runs along Main Street between Old Rand Road and Lake Street, will bring about immense advantages for both residents and retailers with charming gathering spots, homes, eclectic commercial business and pedestrian routes.
Creating a pedestrian-friendly area is an integral feature of Lake Zurich’s downtown redevelopment plan. The new downtown design has implemented pedestrian paths, contributing to easy access to the popular promenade, neighboring recreational areas and downtown retailers. The plans also include a beautifully landscaped walkway through the area’s latest townhomes, which will link downtown Lake Zurich with Breezewald Park.
U.S. Route 22, which bisects the downtown area, is a heavily traveled roadway in Lake Zurich that has produced substantial traffic in the Village’s downtown. Back in 1992, residents selected the design of the well-planned Route 22 Bypass in order to meet the future transportation and downtown residential and economical needs of the burgeoning area.
Construction along the Route 22 Bypass is now complete, greatly minimizing traffic on Main Street and supporting the plan’s pedestrian-friendly aim. Stretching from Buesching Road to Ela Road, the Route 22 Bypass has also helped to create additional space for highly demanded parking.
Now, getting around Lake Zurich is made even easier than in years past through the Village’s dedication to providing its residents, businesses and visitors the highest quality in travel.
