Whether you are an adult searching for the perfect fitness class or a parent who is scouting around for the ideal day camp, the Foglia YMCA is one of the best places to look. Located at 1025 Old McHenry Road in Lake Zurich, this family-oriented organization has continued building on a solid foundation of traditional programming, punctuated with continually updated offerings for its members to keep things interesting.

Foglia YMCA spans 11,000 square feet and includes a Yoga/Pilates studio, cycling studio, free weight room, fitness testing lab and aerobics studio—as well as a large pool area. With over 75 pieces of cardiovascular equipment and two full lines of strength training equipment, this wellness center is well-prepared to meet the needs of its members. Programming is available for an enormous range of ages, and the YMCA has geared things for everyone from 6 months of age all the way to seniors. The Ela Senior Township is also located on the building’s grounds.

Member Relations Director Bonnie Caputo believes that it is the staff that really makes the difference at the facility. “Everyone here is really here for the mission—and it’s all about the family,” she says. “We have a fairly new Executive Director, Carrie Wall, and she is amazing,” Caputo remarks. “She has really taken the time to listen carefully to the membership and is making changes based on their feedback.”

The facility has two pools: a 75 x 45 foot lap pool and a warmer, instructional pool that measures 45 x 18 feet. Both are located in a beautiful room with enormous windows that provide pleasant views for patrons as they exercise. Programming includes swim lessons as well as water fitness classes. Open swim time is also available and the Arthritis Foundation offers their aquatic program here for those with arthritis, fibromyalgia or other related conditions.

Group fitness classes are scheduled for all levels and include muscle conditioning, Pilates and Yoga in addition to other staples. Personal training is also available and can be done either one-on-one, with a partner or in a group setting. Other services that are offered (for an extra charge) include weight management consultations, metabolic testing, body composition and fitness assessments. Private and semi-private Pilates training sessions are also an option for those wanting a bit more instruction than a group class might provide.

Youth sports programming at Foglia YMCA really focuses on team building, sportsmanship, developing skills and fun. There is a wide selection of programs and leagues geared for different ages. Some examples include “Tiny Tumblers” for those from 1 to 3 years of age and up and Jr. Basketball and Soccer for those 6 to 7. League play is available for those 3 and up and among the choices are basketball, soccer and flag football. The facility is also gearing up to begin some adult leagues—those interested should check in with staff to see what will be available.

Although the Foglia YMCA has an incredible amount of programming, it tends to leave their Sundays fairly open. “We like to try and keep Sundays as ‘program-free’ as possible so that people can just come in and spend that time together as a family,” says Caputo. She also adds, “We do a lot of family events.”

Before and after school programs are available for children, and summer also brings the various day camp options. The YMCA also offers “Adventure Programming,” which consists of different ages and skill levels utilizing the enormous rock wall in the gym for both exercise and fun.

Fitness and family go hand in hand at the Foglia YMCA, making it an attractive option for area families. Those interested in membership or specific programs can either inquire by calling (847) 438-5300 or visit the YMCA’s website at www.fogliaymca.org
