
Mattoon is ideally situated in the mid-eastern section of Illinois within Coles County. Its location sits between three major cities—Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis—all within a 2.5-hour drive from the community. Mattoon is encircled by a number of transportation systems including major highways, rail lines and airports.
Interstate 57 is one of the state’s two major north-south interstates, which runs through the east and southern tip of Mattoon, allowing easy navigation through the city. Drivers are easily able to reach Mattoon through I-57’s exit 190 on the community’s east side and I-57’s exit 184 on the south side. Serving as a north-south highway, U.S. Route 45 travels between Lake Superior and the Gulf of Mexico, offering connections to a wealth of interstate highways: I-24, I-57, I-70, I-74, I-80, I-55 and I-90. The community’s bloodlines are U.S. Route 45, Route 121 and Route 16. A third interstate exchange for Interstate 57 is currently under construction at mile marker number 193, approximately three miles north of Mattoon.

Amtrak provides service to and from Mattoon at the Illinois Central Station, located in downtown Mattoon. Local residents have been supporting the renovation and expansion of the station through Project Depot, an organization developed to preserve and renovate the age-stricken station. Between 2,100 and 2,700 commuters each month use the services provided by the rail line in Mattoon, which offers three morning trains, as well as three in the evening. Travelers also have access to the bus services of Greyhound, with a bus stop located at 1904 Broadway Avenue.
A number of airports are located in and near the Mattoon city limits: Coles County Memorial Airport in the Mattoon/Charleston region, the University of Illinois-Willard Airport in Savoy and the Decatur Airport.
Businesses are supplied with the services of the Canadian National Railway Company, which runs through the Mattoon community, carrying product in and out of the area to a handful of cities across the United States.
