Economic Depelopment in Mattoon

The business environment in the city of Mattoon has been a strong driving force ever since the founding of the community. New businesses, both large and small, are attracted to the Mattoon area for a number of reasons, including: easy access to larger cities, the closest being Chicago, St. Louis and Indianapolis; the affordability of land in the region; and the strong work ethic of the employee base in the area. New developments include an organic meat processing facility along the west side of the community.

The area’s location directly off of Interstate 57, which provides links to several farther major interstates, affords easy transport for businesses. Its position in the heart of the Midwest transportation network puts it within proximity to half of the country’s population, in addition to 65 percent of the U.S.’s manufacturing region.

According to Coles Together, the economic development organization for Coles County, a survey of local manufacturers has shown that the “labor force here demonstrates high product quality, high productivity, high reliability and low absenteeism,” with the county’s labor productivity numbers continuously ranking higher than the national average.
