Agriculture and Industry in Mattoon

Agriculture and industry play large roles in Mattoon’s strong local economy, with such companies as American Pad & Paper, General Electric, Justrite Manufacturing Co., Mattoon Precision Manufacturing, R.R. Donnelley & Sons, Mars Petcare US and Lenders Bagel located within the city’s boundaries. In addition to these top industrial companies, the community houses three grain elevators in town. Mattoon’s positive business environment has consistently attracted new and innovative companies to the area, raising the quality of life in the community.

The Mattoon Enterprise Park is a 230-acre site zoned for industrial use. The park’s lots range between two acres and 15 acres, with prices going for $8,000-$15,000 per acre. The Enterprise Park is positioned along U.S. 45, one mile from the new I-57 interchange. Further industrial-zoned space can be found at the 66-acre Mattoon City Site, bordering U.S. 45, three miles from the new I-57 interchange.

Agricultural business is a leading force in Mattoon. The Farmers Grain Co. of Dorans, specializes in grain and field beans and farm supplies, while U.S. Soy LLC has used Mattoon’s abundant land supply for storage facilities, a processing plant and offices. The company chose Mattoon as their location due to the area being recognized as one of the top areas in the country for the growing of soy beans. U.S. Soy hails as one of the most substantial soy bean inventories of Organic food grade bean varieties in the entire nation.

Mattoon is comprised of over 18,000 acres of farmland, housing nearly 300 farms. For support, the farmers join the Coles County Farm Bureau, a part of the Illinois Farm Bureau. Ninety-six counties in Illinois participate in the Bureau, which represents two out of every three farmers in the state. The organization’s mission is “to improve the economic well-being of agriculture and enrich the quality of farm family life.” The Coles County Farm Bureau aids farmers by providing updated information on modern technology, informing farmers of aspects impacting agriculture in the area, representing farmers in local, state and national government and offering marketing and educational services to enhance member’s net farm income.
