Government in Mattoon
The city of Mattoon is dedicated to providing residents with a safe and prosperous place to live. The City Council meets every first and third Tuesday of the month at City Hall at 6:30 p.m. The Mattoon Police Department patrols the 9.8- square miles of Mattoon’s corporate city limits. The Mattoon Fire Department responds to calls from three stations—two are located in the city and one is situated at the Coles County Airport.
Furthermore, Mattoon has been an active part in the United States’ military service since the 1830s. Completed in 1956, the current Army National Guard Armory has been the site of a handful of Infantry Units and Combat Service Support Units.
