Special Olympics
Mattoon’s Lake Land College hails as the proud location of the annual Special Olympics Family Festival (SOFF), a tradition that has been a significant aspect of the community since 1984. SOFF has grown to become an event that attracts close to 1,000 Special Olympians annually, affording the athletes and spectators a day of games, entertainment, food and more.
The Festival is seen as one of the biggest events supporting America’s Special Olympians. Some 1,500 volunteers from area universities, community organizations, one of Mattoon’s largest companies, Consolidated Communications, and others meet on the college grounds to join forces in putting together a stellar event each September.
