The City of McHenry grew from the banks of the Fox River during the mid-1930s. Starting with Riverside Drive, the small downtown area soon expanded to Green Street. Later, West McHenry (Gagetown) was born. Although maintaining their distinct personalities, the three downtown areas are unified today under the McHenry Downtown Business Association. This association aggressively pursues events and activities designed to create community excitement and draw tourism to the area.
