McHenry Elementary School District 15 boundaries encompass 41.5 square miles and serve 4,700 students ranging from pre-school to eighth grade. High School District 156 requires all students to take a core group of academic courses while allowing each to select electives with a wide range of options. Johnsburg Community Unit District 12 serves the area northeast of McHenry. It has a total enrollment of 2,400 students in its five schools, with 750 in a modern high school building. McHenry County College is a community college offering more than 50 associate degree programs. MCC courses are available on campus and at various locations throughout the area.
