McHenry County Higher Education


McHenry County is home to McHenry County College (MCC).  As a community college, MCC serves more than 15,000 students and offers more than 50 associate degree programs.  MCC courses are available on campus and at various locations throughout McHenry County.  Colleges and universities, such as Columbia College and Webster University offer four-year degree programs through MCC. Other schools, such as Northern Illinois University, Loyola University, DePaul University, Northwestern University, and more are easily accessible by McHenry County students and residents. 

Celebrating almost 40 years of service to the community, McHenry County College is the county’s center for higher education and lifelong learning. MCC offers six associate degree programs, which provide the first two years of a baccalaureate college curriculum; 17 Applied Science associate degrees designed for career training; and 43 certificate programs. Agreements with other area community college allow students to take vocational programs that are not offered at MCC.

Students can also earn a four-year Bachelor of Arts or Science degree through affiliation with a number of four-year schools. Go to for more information and a current listing of affiliations. MCC is also the area’s resource for:

- Lifelong Learning
Including programs for kids, retired adults (RAP), and non-credit courses ranging from financial planning to belly dancing.

- Distance Education
Earn a degree or certificate through this unique program. Students earning a distance education degree complete at least 50% of their course work with distance education technology.

- Continuing Professional Education
MCC meets the continuing education needs of professionals through a variety of short courses, seminars, or conferences at University Center in downtown Crystal Lake.

- Nursing education
MCC offers a Licensed Practical Nursing program in partnership with Rock Valley College in Rockford. MCC also offers a Nurse Assistant Training Program, and an RN program is being developed.

- Corporate Training and Small Business Development
Services include training grant assistance, customized on-site training, financial and planning assistance, workshops and seminars, export assistance, and more—all offered at The Shah Center, 4100 W. Shamrock Lane in McHenry.

- A Full-Service Conference Center
Complete with catering and breakout rooms, the MCC conference center features a 357-seat auditorium with stage and the latest presentation technology.

- Free Library Access
Available for all McHenry County residents 16 years of age or older.

- Affordable Fitness
MCC’s fitness center features a full line of weight training machines, treadmills, stair machines, elliptical trainers and more—including a friendly, helpful staff.

- The Children’s Learning Center
Offers a positive learning environment for young children ages 15 months to five years and a lab site for Early Childhood Education students. Students and employees can take advantage of flexible scheduling for their children within this age range. Additionally, a preschool program for children between the ages of three and five is available to parents in the community. The CLC is state licensed and accredited buy the National Academy of Early Childhood Programs.

Columbia College (MO)
Columbia College, located at University Center in Crystal Lake, offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree programs in Business Administration, General Studies, and Psychology. Accredited by NCA and authorized through the Illinois Board of Higher Education to grant four-year degrees through a cooperated agreement with McHenry County College.


Webster University (MO)
Also located at University Center, Webster University offers a Master of Business Administration, a Master of Arts with four areas of concentration and a Master of Arts in Teaching. Students must hold a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution to apply for admission.

George Williams College of Aurora University
Located on the shores of Geneva Lake, George Williams College of Aurora University offers undergraduate degree programs in recreation administration, organizational leadership, marketing and communication.  Master’s degree programs are available in recreation administration, teacher education, teacher education with certification, educational leadership, business administration and social work. Aurora University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association to award bachelor’s, master’s and the Ed.D. degree.
