World’s Greatest Little City
Regarded as one of the most desirable cities in the Illinois Valley area, Mendota offers small-town values that complement the city’s dedication to providing metropolitan amenities.
The name “Mendota” is a Native American term that means “crossing of the trails.” This apt description can be applied to the city’s historic location as the juncture where the Illinois Central Railroad and Chicago & Aurora Railroad crossed. Mendota’s unique style and character evolved from that early railroad community of 1853 and continues to flavor life in the city today.
Though located near major metropolitan areas like Chicago, Rockford, Bloomington-Normal and Peoria, Mendota still maintains a warm, rural foundation where the joys of small-town living can be enjoyed.
Through careful controlled growth, houses are still affordable and available. School students receive only the best that education has to offer through the caring and consistent support of their teachers and school administrators. Two beautiful lakes form the centerpiece of Mendota recreational activities, which includes areas of both natural and manicured parkland. Mendota is also fortunate to have a diversity of industries and the cooperation of the City officials, who not only seek new jobs and business for the area, but also encourage growth for existing industries. As well, there are many family owned and operated retail stores.
Many Mendota residents refer to their town as the “World’s Greatest Little City.” Considering the numerous assets of the city and the undeniable welcoming spirit, it’s no wonder.
