Niles is the home of numerous civic clubs and community organizations devoted to creating strong ties, providing leadership, and helping the needy. There are dozens of active groups in the Niles area that have charters and members spanning many generations. Contact the Niles Chamber of Commerce for more information regarding schedules, activities and membership. Niles Sister Cities The Niles Sister City Committee consists of numerous volunteers who meet once a month to create an atmosphere in which international communication can be implemented and strengthened. Specifically, the committee members maintain a strong communication network with representatives from the Village's sister cities, and the members create the possibility of both communities experiencing and exploring the other's culture through a long-term friendship. The Committee is endorsed by the Mayor and Board; and all parties encourage and promote future sister city partnerships. A major element of sister cities is the Student Exchange Program. Every two years, a group of eight to 10 high school students travel to one of our Sister Cities for a month and live with host families. The other year, students from Sister Cities come to Niles and live with volunteer host families. These exchanges provide an opportunity to develop a better understanding of each country's culture and to establish long lasting friendships. "The Sister Cities program is an important resource to the negotiations of governments in letting the people themselves give expression of their common desire for friendship, goodwill and cooperation for a better world for all." - President Dwight D. Eisenhower
