Aside from Northbrook’s outstanding educational offerings for public students, The Cove School is dedicated solely to children with learning disabilities. Dr. Sally Sover, Executive Director of The Cove School (www.coveschool.org) says, “Our school offers programs and services that are unique to serving children with complex learning disabilities.”
Founded in 1947, and in Northbrook since l986, Cove has served children with learning disabilities throughout the Chicago metropolitan area for 60 years. Students come to Cove from nearly 50 school districts throughout the entire Chicago area. According to Sover, “It’s an exceptional environment where children in grades K-12 can discover how to learn and develop the emotional and social skills they need to succeed in life.”
Cove provides small classroom sizes that typically consist of eight students. Each classroom has an LD teacher, an assistant, and several specialists working with the students. Over 70 staff members serve the school’s 120 students. An integrated academic program is provided to the students through a collaborative teaching model that includes the support of seven Speech/ Language Pathologists, five social workers, three reading teachers, two occupational therapists, and one assistive technology specialist. Katie Puszynski, one of the school’s occupational therapists noted, “Students at Cove benefit from unique OT services that are just not possible in the public school setting.”
Additionally, the school’s comprehensive fine arts program encourages students to build upon their individual strengths as they express themselves through theater productions, visual arts, music, and photography. Each year, The Cove Fine Arts Program puts on an annual play that takes place at the Northbrook Theatre. “The annual play is a highlight of the year,” said Kerry Hays, Cove teacher and director. Last year, over 50 Cove students participated in Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. “It was a synergy of all that happens within our community,” Hays remarked.
Chris Grene, a social worker who has been at Cove for eight years says, “At Cove, the students have a peer group and immediately feel a strong sense of community.” Grene added, “Parents also have the opportunity to network and receive support from other adults on a similar journey.”
Fall of 2006 marked the completion of a major building expansion and the beginning of a new era at Cove. The beautiful new campus now includes a sensory garden, an expanded occupational therapy room, a new activity complex, an art studio, a multi-media center and a separate high school wing with elective classrooms. “With our new facility, students receive the room they need to achieve new growth – academically, socially, and physically,” Sover concluded. “Cove is a unique learning environment in which learning differences are embraced and the uniqueness of each child is celebrated.”
Focusing on the acclaimed philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori, Children’s Learning Path Montessori (CLPM) lays the path for its young students, promoting a truly strong foundation for life. The non-profit, non-denominational, private organization is nestled in a charming, serene area of Northbrook at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. The school is associated with the American Montessori Society, with its dedicated teachers all receiving AMS certification.
Children from the ages of two years through six years can receive esteemed education from CLPM through programs in a nurturing and challenging environment solely devoted to the all-embracing development of its cherished students. The expansive curriculum focuses on areas including practical life, language, sensorial, mathematics and primary-level science, geography and history. On top of these refined areas, those enrolled also acquire music and Spanish instruction each week from highly qualified professionals.
The recently incorporated toddlers program for children aged two years to three years has become quite popular in the greater Northbrook area, with students aged three years to six years placed in a beneficial multi-age classroom setting. Registered with the Illinois Board of Education, CLPM affords a full-day kindergarten program, as well as half-day and afternoon offerings to children at both the kindergarten and pre-kindergarten age level.
During those active summer months, CLPM provides an outstanding summer camp program where children can learn about the Montessori philosophy, participate in hands-on activities about plant and animal life, take pleasure in learning about different cultures, food, music, language and environment, as well as study the four basic food groups in order to receive important education on living a healthy lifestyle.
