A body of dedicated civil servants entrusted to maintain the highest standards, uphold the law and enrich the lives of its citizens governs Northlake. The city’s government and services are second to none when it comes to providing leadership and commitment to the future. A full time Mayor and City Council consisting of eight elected aldermen, a City Clerk and a City Treasurer govern Northlake. The City Council holds regular meetings on the first and third Monday of every month at City Hall. The public is always invited to participate by voicing concerns and opinions.

Holding the public trust in highest esteem, these local officials provide first rate service and professional security for Northlake. It is an ideal place to live, work and raise a family.

The Northlake Police Department exemplifies integrity and ethical behavior and works hand-in-hand with community leaders to provide a safe environment for all. It has established the Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving Program (C.O.P.P.S.) for one-on-one community cooperation in crime prevention. Other N.P.D. involvement includes Neighborhood Watch for neighborhood security; D.A.R.E. and V.E.G.A., which provide educational programs for young people to teach them how to resist drugs, violence and gangs; and BLOCK HOME, which provides parents throughout the city a safe haven in emergencies and assists in child fingerprinting and record keeping for parents. Through proactive involvement with civic leaders, parents and children, the N.P.D. maintains the security of all citizens in Northlake.

The Northlake Fire Protection District, formed and incorporated in 1941, has 17 full-time personnel, 15 paid-on-call personnel and six Paramedics.

The department is manned 24 hours a day and operates one aerial ladder truck, two engines, one ambulance, one crew cab, one fire prevention automobile and chief automobile. The Northlake Fire Protection District is a member of the M.A.B.A.S. (Mutual Aid Box Alarm System) 20th Division, which has 20 member departments and allows a member department to request help from any other member fire department. In 1996 the Northlake Fire Protection District purchased a "Thermal Imager" that enables a firefighter to see through unfamiliar surroundings and obstacles, even under complete darkness or the heaviest of smoke conditions. The Northlake Fire Protection District services the following geographical boundaries: Lake Street south, Fullerton north, Mannheim Road east and I-294 west.
