The O’Fallon area is home to a wide variety of businesses—some with unique features, and others that sell unusual products. The following is a little sampler of what can be found both in and around the city:
FRIEZE HARLEY-DAVIDSON OF O’FALLON—Green And Proud
Motorcycles might not immediately make you think of a green building, but Frieze Harley-Davidson of O’Fallon is a pioneer in the area. The store boasts a 60-foot turbine, which collects power that contributes to the electricity needs of the 34,000-square-foot building. The turbine is located in front of the building, and Administrative Assistant Pam Beykirch points out that it gets quite a bit of attention. “People have been impressed by the turbine, and we get a lot of interest in it.”
The turbine isn’t the only green feature that this building has. Indoors, one can also find things such as solar tube lighting, bamboo floors and a unique sensor system located inside the display cases that causes them to light up when customers come nearby. The dealership’s repair shop is even heated by using recycled motor oil.
CAMP BOW WOW— Doggie Daycare And More
Pets are truly members of the family and the idea of “doggie daycare” is one that is becoming increasingly popular. Camp Bow Wow is both a daycare and overnight boarding facility that takes care to make sure that dogs have an enjoyable stay. Paul and Gina Stroh are dog lovers who decided to open this facility in the O’Fallon area for those who wanted quality care for their dogs while they are away.
After an initial “interview” where dogs are evaluated for temperament and shot records are reviewed, they are then cleared for playing with each other all day long instead of sitting at home waiting for their owner to return. “The dogs are divided by size and temperament, and we have four different play yards,” says Paul Stroh. Camp Bow Wow also has dog food, treats, bones and collars on hand, in case customers don’t want to make an extra stop on their way home.

THE TYE-DYED IGUANA— Exotic And Educational
You won’t find many stores that specialize 100 percent in reptiles, but The Tye-Dyed Iguana is one of them. Owners Matt and Stephanie Smallheer have taken what began as a hobby and turned it into a family business that stands out from the crowd. “We are a one-stop shop,” says Matt Smallheer, noting that they carry supplies and food in addition to the reptiles themselves. They typically stock between 70 and 80 different species in the 3,500-square- foot storefront, and they take pride in helping their customers out. “Our relationship with people doesn’t stop when they buy the animals,” says Matt.
Educating people about the beauty and proper care of reptiles is a part of the couple’s passion and they do many appearances at schools, birthday parties and other events. They have talked with groups ranging in size from five to 900 people, helping them to better understand reptiles. “It’s all very hands-on; they can touch, hold and pet the animals,” says Matt Smallheer.
