Recreation facilities in Orland Park continue to increase in kind and number as the community expands. Today, the Village boasts about 50 well-equipped parks encompassing a total of over 550 acres. In all, there are 46 baseball fields, 39 basketball courts, 25 tennis courts, 23 soccer fields, 36 playgrounds, 11 bocce ball courts, and the Humphrey Bike Trail. There are 10 locations to catch fish, a half-dozen large picnic sites, and several wintertime ice rinks.

In the heart of the community is the Village’s largest park, encompassing 192 acres of recreation space. Created in 1992, Orland Park’s 100th year, it is appropriately named Centennial Park. A popular summertime spot at Centennial Park is the Aquatic Center, with an 18,000-square-foot swimming pool, seven large water slides, a 1,000-foot Lazy River, and a deep-water play area.

The Grinding Edge Skate Park, one of the newest additions, has fast become a favorite with skaters and skateboarders alike. The skate park shares its 80,000-square-foot location with a baseball/softball complex, soccer fields, and a marina boardwalk and natural area that is ideal for long walks along Lake Sedgewick. Another feature of Centennial Park is the handicapped accessible Kevin Hertz Memorial Playground, named for a former participant in the Village’s Special Recreation Program.

Cold weather finds Centennial Park’s Winter Wonderland Ice Rink and warming house open from about Thanksgiving until the end of February. The open areas around the Ice Rink provide a snowy landscape for the cross-country skiers seen traversing through the snow.

The Village’s Recreation and Parks Department is headquartered in the Franklin E. Loebe Recreation Center, site of a daycare program, and rooms for various recreational activities.

There is also a gymnasium and indoor running track.

The department’s John Humphrey Sports Complex is nearby and has 20 acres of lighted baseball, softball, soccer, and football fields.

A paved walking, jogging, and biking path connects the Village Center Complex and the John Humphrey Sports Complex with Centennial Park.

The Recreation and Parks Department plans and coordinates a complete, year-round program of sports, recreation, and activities for residents of all ages.

At any one time during the year, Village residents are involved in close to 200 different recreational activities.

Orland Park, long known as the “Golf Center of the World,” has several golf courses within the community and a total of 21 in the immediate area, including the famed Cog Hill Golf and Country Club with its four courses, among them the renowned Dubsdread, home of the Western Open.

Fun time in Orland Park means facilities, and facilities mean a full measure of family fun for everyone.

The Sportsplex is a welcomed addition to its recreational lineup featuring 90,000 square feet of activity space, including three court gymnasiums, indoor soccer field, gymnastic room, aerobics studio, walking track, a fully equipped fitness center, babysitting area, and a towering climbing wall.

Plans include more parks as each new neighborhood develops. A considered addition includes 12-acre Colette Highlands Park that, along with a playground facility, will include a smaller version of the north suburban Ravinia outdoor concert venue. The Orland Park Open Land Funds Commission was established to acquire additional open space, helping to maintain the area’s open and natural character.
