All modes of transportation including air, rail and water
are available to the community. Two Federal and seven State and Interstate
Highways including I-74 and I-474, two miles from town, serve Pekin. Twenty-four
motor freight terminals are available for the two local carriers and 47
Intrastate Carriers that operate in the region. Air travelers make use of the Greater Peoria Airport, which is only ine miles away. Eight commercial airlines operate 35 flights daily. Pekin Municipal Airport, four miles from downtown, has a 5,000 ft. lighted runway, available charter service, private storage, and maintenance and fuel facilities. Seven different railroad companies, the C & IM, T.P.W., NW, ICG, Conrail BN, CNW and P & PU, use the tracks that traverse the Pekin area. The nearest piggyback service is five miles from town, as is the nearest container service. Barges hauling heavy freight to and from Pekin access the nations waterways throughout the year from the public dock and facilities located three miles from the city. The Greater Peoria Mass Transit District and the Pekin Municipal Bus Service recently initiated a cooperative effort that offers Central Illinois bus service between Peoria and Pekin.
