Since 1972, the Pekin Marigold Festival has honored the late Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen, a native of Pekin, and his favorite flower, the marigold. Due to Dirksens efforts, Pekin soon became known as "The Marigold Capital of the World." Held the first week after Labor Day each summer, the event is host to over 100,000 visitors.
The exciting Medallion Hunt and the Miss Marigold pageant are first on the agenda. On Friday night, the fun continues with the downtown family fest. As you roam through the crowds meeting old friends, delicious food and entertainment are readily available.
Saturday begins with a parade, and continues with Saturday night events, Art in the Park, an all-church community service, Sunday golf tournaments, and many more excellent events every year. A variety of food and sweets from sandwiches and tacos to funnel cakes to an old fashion ice cream social await your selection.
The Marigold Festival relies on hundreds of volunteers committed to a successful weekend. Through these efforts, the festival promotes participation and pride within the wonderful community of Pekin.
On the Fourth of July, thousands gather at the Pekin Memorial Stadium to view a fantastic program and spectacular fireworks display.
