Today a booming industrial park provides the economic engine that fuels the community. The plants manufacture everything from car components to personal care products to windows, and they attract workers from dozens of central Illinois cities and towns.
For the bulk of the 20th century Chanute Air Force Base was the major employer in Rantoul. When the base closed a few years ago, it left the community with some major challenges, but also some exciting opportunities. Village officials and community leaders worked hard to recruit appropriate businesses to fill the vacant facilities, and today the former base is a thriving economic center that is home to dozens of small and medium-sized companies. Throughout the rest of the town businesses provide customers with just about every retail, service, and professional good they could want.
Although farming doesnt happen much within the village limits, agriculture plays a vital role in the local economy, with hundreds of acres of farm fields surrounding the town, and several agri-service providers located within the community.
