Rockford area residents enjoy the highest quality in medical care from three hospitals in the city and others in the area. The three in Rockford are 447-bed Rockford Memorial, 296-bed Swedish American, and 254-bed OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center.

Rockford Memorial Hospital is part of Rockford Health System which includes the hospital, Rockford Clinic, and Rockford Health Plans. It also has associated clinics in 11 area locations. More than 200 physicians serve on the hospital’s medical staff and 187 others on its courtesy staff.

Among the hospital’s services is an asthma center, breast treatment center, a children’s medical center, a heart center, mammography center, a regional perinatal center, and a rehabilitation center offering physical, speech, and occupational therapies. The hospital is a Level I trauma center and operates the REACT helicopter. In addition, it has a Level III neonatal intensive care unit.

It also offers addiction treatment and education, medical genetics, occupational health and wellness, oncology services, reproductive medicine, psychiatric services, renal dialysis, a sleep lab, and women’s services.

Swedish American Hospital, part of Swedish American Health System, has a medical staff of 260 physicians and surgeons, plus a courtesy staff of 175. It is affiliated with clinics in nine northern Illinois locations, and the Greater Rockford Oncology/Hematology Center. The hospital is a state-designated Level II trauma center.

The services offered by Swedish American are myriad and include cardiovascular medicine, cardiac rehabilitation, pulmonary rehabilitation, regional cancer center, psychiatry and mental health, a children’s medical center including general and specialty pediatrics and pediatric intensive care, geriatrics, women’s services, obstetrics, Level II special care nursery, orthopedics, joint reconstruction, general surgery, laser medicine, and outpatient surgery. In addition it offers gastroenterology, occupational health, physical medicine, and ambulatory rehabilitation therapy services.

Swedish American Hospital is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford.

OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center is a state-designated Level I trauma center and operates Lifeline ambulance and emergency helicopter services. It is also a regional training center for trauma nurses.

The many medical services offered by OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center include its Regional Heart Institute providing the full range of cardiac services from angioplasty to cardiac surgery. The medical center also provides extensive cancer treatment services through its Center for Cancer Care. Its Center for Life offers four labor-delivery-recovery rooms, a Level II intermediate nursery, and private post-partum rooms.

The hospital’s Illinois Neurosciences Institute performs brain surgeries, hemorrhage repairs, reconstructive surgery, seizure surgery, and multiple trauma care. Other services of the medical center include audiology and speech testing, sports medicine, diabetes care, dental surgery, neurological intensive care, occupational health services, pain management, cardiac rehabilitation, physical and occupational therapy, and outpatient surgery.

OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center operates sophisticated diagnostic and treatment equipment, including CT scanning, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), EEG/EMG, ultrasound, and transcranial Doppler.

Some 640 physicians and 200 dentists practice in the Rockford area, giving residents the widest possible choice. Dozens of excellent nursing homes are located in the area, providing short and long-term intermediate and skilled nursing care. The area also has several retirement communities which provide everything from independent living to assisted living to nursing care.
