graphicRock Island’s greatest asset is its residents. With a population of about 40,000, Rock Island has a rich, diverse population of many different ethnic backgrounds. Rock Island is truly a city for people of all races, backgrounds, and talents.

graphicThe citizens of Rock Island are doers. If there is a problem, a citizen or civic group is likely to be working to find solutions. Residents of Rock Island get involved in their community. More than 300 volunteers serve on city boards, commissions, task forces and committees that deal with everything from beautification to community pride.

The City of Rock Island, in appreciation for all the countless volunteer hours that its citizens put in each year, sponsors a Citizen of the Year contest to recognize those who have made a significant contribution toward making Rock Island a great place to live. Although there is no way to thank all the people who make our community great, the Citizen of the Year award program is at least a small way to say "thank you" to those who have given so much.
