As cornerstones of their community, Schaumburg businesses go beyond the everyday routine of taking care of their customers; they also take care of the community-at-large.
Dan Origer, owner of DJ’s Auto Radiator Service, orchestrates an annual fund-raising event for the American Cancer Society (ACS). Origer’s support of the ACS goes back to 2005 when his mother, who had worked at DJ’s Auto since its founding, lost her battle with cancer.
The one-day event is supported by local businesses and NAPA. Once a year, on a designated Saturday, DJ’s Auto performs oil changes with 100 percent of the proceeds donated to the American Cancer Society. Many of Origer’s fellow businesspeople help make the benefit a success and a memorable tribute to Origer’s mother by donating prizes that are given away throughout the day-long event. Garibaldi’s of Hoffman Estates also provides food at a discounted rate, and NAPA Auto donates all the oil and filters.
Bob Petersen, president of Petersen’s Auto Body, also enjoys giving back to his customers and the community. The Petersen family (Bob’s wife, son and granddaughter also work at the shop) supports the local fire and police associations and helped in the 2006 drive to raise funds for the purchase of bullet-proof vests for the men and women in blue. Bob says that he also donates annually to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
The shop opened its doors January 22, 1973 — nearly 35 years ago — in its current location. A 1954 Peaugot and a 1942 Ford are among the many cars of days gone by that the Petersen shop has worked on.
