An array of natural resources provides South Elgin residents with many wonderful recreational opportunities. The Fox River provides hours of enjoyment and relaxation for fishing enthusiasts, canoeists and kayakers. Hikers, cyclists, rollerbladers and joggers alike enjoy the Fox River Trail, which is a paved path running adjacent to the Fox River from Algonquin to Aurora and right through South Elgin. The Forest Preserve District of Kane County maintains the Jon J. Duerr Forest Preserve in South Elgin, which is home to a natural waterfall and woodlands. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, fishing, bird-watching, walking along the trail and taking in the beautiful surroundings.

The South Elgin Parks and Recreation Department offers an assortment of programs, events, camps, trips, athletics and fitness programs for people of all ages and abilities. Numerous parks maintained throughout the village each have a diversity of features. Facilities include playgrounds, picnic areas, ball fields, basketball courts, soccer fields, volleyball courts, concessions stands, fishing areas and covered shelters. The department also hosts Klub Friday Night (KFN), which is a safe and supervised place for children in the fourth through seventh grades to meet and have fun through a host of games, dances and more. The Parks and Recreation Department also runs the Disc Golf Course, which is open from mid-March through October. Holes are located at three parks along the river, and discs can be rented from Village Hall. Golfing is a popular local pastime. Pheasant Run Resort in nearby St. Charles offers two award-winning 18-hole courses, a practice center and a clubhouse lounge. Pottawatomie Golf Club, also in St. Charles, is a multiple award-winning regulation 9-hole course and a certified Audubon sanctuary. Offerings include lessons, leagues, a well-stocked pro shop and more. Just north in Elgin are Rolling Knolls Country Club, Spartan Meadows Golf Club and the Highlands of Elgin. All are 18-hole courses offering fun and challenge for players of varying abilities. Additional golf courses in neighboring suburbs include Hughes Creek Golf Club, St. Andrews Golf and Country Club, Villa Olivia Country Club, Apple Orchard Golf Course and Bartlett Hills Golf Club.
