The governmental affairs of South Elgin are conducted by the Village President and a six-member Board of Trustees. They are elected at-large and act as the policy-making body, meeting on the first and third Monday of every month at Village Hall. Five departments exist within the Village: Finance, Parks & Recreation, Police, Public Works and Community Development. Department heads are selected by the Board and serve under the organizational direction of the Village Administrator.
The South Elgin Police Department is proud to protect the lives and property of residents, businesses and visitors 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Along with crime prevention, traffic enforcement, patrol, investigations and more, South Elgin’s highly trained officers are committed to various community programs such as Drug Abuse and Resistance Education, Neighborhood Watch, Business Security and Identity Theft Awareness. The Department is dedicated to providing “community-based programs while increasing…efforts to meet the new challenges of a rapidly growing community.”
The South Elgin and Countryside Fire Protection District is committed to fire prevention and suppression, safety and public education. Personnel consist of paid and paid-on-call firefighters, highly qualified and certified at a minimum level of Firefighter II. All full-time personnel are certified paramedics and almost half on the paid-on-call firefighters are certified paramedics as well. The District’s I.S.O. rating is a Class 4 within village limits and a Class 6 for rural areas. This rating ranks “among the top 10 percent of fire agencies in the state for preparedness training and responsibility.” Along with fire and emergency services, the district offers a number of public programs and services such as CPR instruction, certified babysitter courses, block party visits and elementary school fire safety classes.
