A multitude of quality neighborhood, community and regional recreational resources are available here. More than 30 public parks provide recreational opportunities from tennis courts to ice rinks, swimming pools to Frisbee golf courses. Additionally, there are wildlife sanctuaries, a zoo, numerous hiking areas, equestrian and bike trails, nine public golf courses, several country club golf courses, and a water park. Popular spectator sports include the Springfield Jr. Blues Hockey Team, the L.P.G.A. State Farm Classic Golf Tournament, the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS) collegiate sports teams; and spectacular events at the Prairie Capital Convention Center.

Cultural programs, events, exhibits, concerts, classes and performances are available across the spectrum of arts. The Springfield Theater Center features talented local performers, and the community is home to the Muni Opera, a ballet company, and an outstanding symphony orchestra as well. Sangamon Auditorium at UIS offers world-class entertainment and cultural events year-round.
