Sterling and Rock Falls residents alike are proud of the quality education and opportunities offered by their respective school systems. These schools are large enough to offer students a wide variety of educational opportunities in technologically advanced learning environments, but small enough to provide a nurturing environment with numerous after-school activities and programs.
Neighborhood elementary schools can be found in both communities, while each town has one public middle school and one public high school that serves students grades nine through twelve. If a parochial education is what you are in search of, students may attend St. Andrew Catholic Elementary School in Rock Falls or St. Mary’s Catholic School, Sterling Christian School or Christ Lutheran School and continue on to Newman Central High School—all in Sterling.
For individuals seeking advanced technical courses, students throughout the area can attend the Whiteside Area Career Center in Sterling. If the Career Center does not provide the classes necessary, individuals aspiring to be cosmeticians can attend the Educators of Beauty College in Sterling, which helps prepare graduates for the state licensing exam and offers an educator training program for students wishing to become a licensed educator at a cosmetology college.

For a higher education, Sauk Valley Community College offers two-year transfer degrees in art or science in 39 areas; associate degrees in engineering science, liberal studies and fine arts; Associate of Applied Science degrees in 21 areas; one-year certificates in 37 areas; men’s and women’s sports and cultural programs. The college also offers bachelor’s degree programs on campus through three area universities: National Louis University, Western Illinois University’s Board of Trustees program and Ashford University. Sauk also offers adult education classes, community service and business training, including the Small Business Development Center of Northwestern Illinois. In addition, Sauk Commons, which is just east of campus, is a student housing complex offering fully furnished two and four bedroom apartments. There are many student organizations and activities for those who wish to participate in college-sponsored programs outside the classroom.
