Everyone loves to unwind and relax—whether this means hanging out at the beach or going for a leisurely bike ride. While there are plenty of solo recreation opportunities in Sycamore, the town also has its fair share of places that families can go together for a good time outdoors. There is always plenty to do right in the area.

SYCAMORE FAMILY Sports Center

Located at 725 E. State St., the Sycamore Family Sports Center is a terrific place to go if you have kids. Being active together is not only a bonding experience, but it’s healthy as well. Stretch your legs and go mini-golfing outside at the Center’s 18-hole facility or check out the golf range and practice for the course. Take a pass on television for the evening and hit the go-kart track instead—both single- and double-seated go-karts are available.

For those who prefer something a little different, the Center also features batting cages (bats and helmets are provided at no cost). All of the pitching machines have adjustable speeds, and there are baseball and softball options, including little league baseball and fast pitch softball. New soccer kicking cages are on-site as well.

The hours at the Center run from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily during the season, with exterior lighting for those activities that are located outdoors. Take the family outdoors for a challenging afternoon or evening of sports, and enjoy your time together.

SYCAMORE RV Resort

This family-owned business has been around for more than 20 years and is still going strong. Located at 375 E. North Ave., the Sycamore RV Resort isn’t just a place to park and hook up a vehicle for the night—it’s a spot to settle in and enjoy the beauty of the natural surroundings in the area. Two spring-fed lakes offer nearly 25 acres of scenery and fishing, and bait and other supplies are sold at the campground store. There is also pop, ice cream, pizza, ice and other items available at the store, and laundry facilities, clean restrooms and hot showers are on-site as well—everything one needs for a comfortable stay.

The Resort is run by Dale and Anita Cappel, and Dale says, “We are a destination that is only four blocks from downtown, so everything is close by, but we have a peaceful, out-of-the-way spot that is really private as well.”

Dale Cappel was a farmer before stepping in with his wife to take over the business from her parents, and he really enjoys it. “It’s a cool way to make a living when you get to see people out enjoying life,” he says.

Picnic tables and a swimming beach provide gathering spots for families who are looking to spend a little time together outdoors. There are also paddle boats and rowboats if lounging out on the water sounds like fun.

Nearby attractions include the Great Western Bike Trail and public golf courses, as well as the Sycamore Speedway. Toward the end of summer, one can also take the family over to the Sycamore Block Party for some entertainment and great food. There are 86 sites here, and the Resort has both short-term and long-term guests. “Some of the people who come here are full-timers that stay here from five to seven months out of the year,” says Cappel.

These are two great examples of places in Sycamore that are fun for the entire family. Take a little time to check them out—or sample some of the other opportunities in town!
